Web of Science is rolling out a new interface, and is offering current users the ability to preview the new interface in the month of November. Access the new interface by going to the Web of Science and clicking on the preview button in the top right corner of the page. This preview allows users to provide feedback to Clarivate about any usability issues and any additional features they would like to see rolled out. There is a purple question mark in the bottom right hand corner of every page. This opens the Resource Center. From there, select Feedback and you will have an opportunity to rate your experience and provide additional comments. If you are interested in providing more feedback, you may also leave an email address.
Clarivate anticipates the new interface will be the default by the summer of 2021. Reveal Digital has launched the first six titles in its American Prison Newspapers collection, and the University of Kentucky has access due its contribution to the Diversity & Dissent Digitization fund. Access is hosted on the JSTOR platform.
In a recent webinar on the collection, James McGrath Morris, author of the book Jailhouse Journalism noted: “Inmates hoped that as a voiceless group of people their complaints, their humanity, their dreams could reach the outside world. Prison newspapers did that. The great value of digitizing these newspapers and making its history open is there are endless areas of research that can be done using these materials, both from things like art and typography to the views of voiceless people in the 19th and 20th century; how they chose to express themselves is all contained in the prison press. Such a collection will be immensely valuable.” Under a library-funded open access model, Reveal Digital aims to publish curated primary source collections from a wide array of libraries, museums, historical societies and individual collectors. This collection will be made Open Access when the cost-recovery threshold is reached. Until then, funding libraries have exclusive access to the content. As a funding library, UK will gain access to materials as they become available. The Libraries also have access to the Understanding Hate in America collection, which was published earlier this year. JSTOR has extended their expanded access offerings through June 30, 2021. Previously, access was to expire at the end of June 2020, and the date was later extended through December 31, 2020. A complete list of available ebook titles can be downloaded here.
In a letter to the JSTOR community, Rebecca Seger (VP, Institutional Participation and Strategic Partnerships) and Kevin Guthrie (President) write, "The challenges faced by the higher education community due to COVID-19 are deep and lasting. We are all affected and need to respond. At ITHAKA, our not-for-profit mission is to make access to knowledge and education more accessible for all. We have asked ourselves what it means to fulfill that mission during these difficult times and have discussed with our trustees creative ways we can respond.... It is clear, however, that our community will need to rely heavily on online instruction beyond this semester and so the need for this expanded access remains. We have therefore decided, in consultation with our trustees, to extend access to unlicensed JSTOR and Artstor collections through June 30, 2021."
